In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the influence of J.S. Bach’s music on a person's psycho-emotional state is presented. The main psychological and neuropsychological mechanisms of music perception as well as their impact on emotional regulation are considered. Structural characteristics of classical music, especially the music by J.S. Bach – strict mathematical organisation, polyphony and predictability – are viewed as the main contributors to emotional balancing. It is argued that these features reduce cognitive load and thus enhance emotional stability. A theoretical model of the influence of Bach’s music that includes structural organisation, cognitive anticipation and emotional regulation is proposed. Also, prospects for further empirical research are outlined.

Keywords: music, J.S. Bach, psycho-emotional state, anxiety, stress, music therapy, emotional regulation.

Life today is characterised by an increased level of psycho-emotional stress caused by the intensification of information load, social and economic instability, and a high degree of uncertainty. In Ukraine, alongside these factors, people are negatively influenced by the full-scale war and its consequences. In this context, the problem of maintaining mental health and finding effective means of emotional balancing becomes especially relevant. Non-pharmacological approaches are of particular interest for their safety, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness.

Numerous studies across different fields have examined the influence of music on individuals. It has been confirmed that music affects functioning of different systems and organs in the human body [4; 7; 8]. Also, research has shown that music is one of the most effective means of influencing the psycho-emotional state. This influence is unique because music can simultaneously affect cognitive, emotional, and psychological processes, leading to a complex regulatory effect [6; 8; 11]. It gives us grounds to consider music a promising subject for studying mechanisms of emotional regulation.

The psycho-emotional state is understood as an integrative characteristic that includes affective experiences, cognitive evaluations, and physiological responses. It is dynamic and is influenced by both internal and external factors. One of the key factors destabilising emotional balance is stress, both acute and chronic, which arises as a response to excessive or long-term stressors [7].

One of the powerful regulators of emotional states is music. Research in music psychology has demonstrated that musical stimuli can elicit a broad spectrum of affective responses, from relaxation to increased arousal [10]. Different mechanisms underlie these effects, including emotional appraisal, associative processes, and expectation of musical progression [9].

Within the scope of neuropsychology, perception of music presupposes activation of the limbic system and reward-related brain structures, particularly dopaminergic pathways [4; 8]. This explains music’s ability to generate pleasure, reduce stress, and improve emotional well-being. Besides, music affects the activity of the autonomic nervous system (including breathing, heart rate, and overall physiological arousal) [5].

From the perspective of music therapy, numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of musical interventions for reducing anxiety and stress levels [5; 7]. Ukrainian scholars also confirm the positive impact of music on emotional stability and the reduction of stress [1; 2]. Classical music occupies a special place among the effective interventions due to its structural organisation, harmony, and predictability. Listeners are capable of processing musical information cognitively because these features enable them to anticipate the development of musical patterns [9; 12; 13]. This predictability plays an essential role in reducing uncertainty, which is a core component of anxiety.

This framework gives us grounds to consider the works of Johann Sebastian Bach as being of special interest. His music is widely recognised as having polyphonic complexity, logical coherence, and mathematical structure [3]. Studies in cognitive neuroscience suggest that compositions by J.S. Bach are characterised by stable structural patterns [3]. From a cognitive perspective, such structured musical material reduces cognitive processing load and enhances perception. At the same time, polyphony stimulates attention and cognitive involvement, while harmonic predictability gives a sense of completeness and emotional balance [8].

So, the influence of Bach’s music on the emotional state can be explained through the mechanism of cognitive anticipation. While listeners process structured musical information, they form predictions about “what is going to happen next”. When these anticipations are fulfilled, there arises a sense of pleasure and emotional stability that contributes to reducing anxiety and stress levels [13].

In the light of these findings, a model of the influence of Bach’s music on the psycho-emotional state can be proposed: music’s structural organisation => cognitive anticipation => reduced cognitive load => activation of emotional regulation mechanisms => emotional stabilisation.

Thus, the balance of complexity and predictability in J.S. Bach’s music creates optimal conditions for regulating the psycho-emotional state of a person. This forms the basis for further empirical research aimed at testing the above-mentioned theoretical assumptions, using psychodiagnostic and psychometric methods.
