ESSENTIAL VOCABULARY FOR ONLINE LESSONS

16.02.2023 14:38
Author: Yuliia Bozhko, PhD in Philology, Department of Theory and Practice of the English Language, H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University
[3. Pedagogical sciences;]

Distance learning is a new educational experience that has appeared in Ukraine recently, but has already managed to find its place in the pedagogical process.  It is the only means of communication for students and teachers during martial law . Non- native  students, studying  foreign languages, may have difficulties in having online small talks or using introductory phrases to present/raise  a new topic or a question. It is  necessary  to focus on basic English phrases for online meetings .

It is recommended to use simple English to start the meeting . The teacher can welcome the students  using phrases :

• Welcome, everyone. Today's meeting is about...

• Welcome to today's lesson. These are  the issues that we  are going to talk about...

• Welcome, everybody. This is our agenda ... Let's get started, shall we?  Everyone is here.

It is desirable to look into the camera so that the students can see you are engaging with them. When  the teacher/ student uses a  computer screen , he can say the following phrases:

• Can I share my screen with you?

• I am going to share my screen/ desktop with you.

• Can you see my screen? Can you see it clearly?

• Do you want me to make it bigger?

• I am going to put up my presentation now.

• If you have got any questions , you can  write them  down in the chat line.

• Scroll up/ down, please.

Sometimes clarification is needed.  The following expressions can be used:

• Could you speak more slowly, please?

• Could you explain that again, please?

• Could you go through that again, please? I didn't quite understand it.

• Could you repeat the last sentence, please?

• Could you speak up, please?

• I didn't quite get that. I am sorry, could you say it again?

• I have just missed the last part. My screen froze for a minute. Could you repeat it ,please?

During online meetings, interruptions can occur. There are certain expressions to make polite interruptions. They are:

• Sorry , would you mind if I asked a question?

• Just to clarify what you are saying is ...

• Could I interrupt you  for a minute?

• Can I stop you there quickly/ just for a minute?

• Hold on a minute , please. We don't seem to have discussed... Could we go back over it?

While having online lessons teachers and students can have some technical  problems with the sound, picture, interruption of connection, freezing, lagging ,etc. The following expressions can be useful:

• I am having problems hearing you.

• The screen is blank.

• The screen is frozen.

• The image and sound are out of sync.

• You are breaking up a little.

• There' s  an echo on the line.

• It is not loading.

• Sorry, I got kicked off [1].

The teacher can continue the lesson with  the phrases:

• Let's move on to the next item.

• Moving on , let's talk about...

• Moving on swiftly, let's have a look at...

• There' s a bit of a time issue  here. So I think we should move on.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher usually summarizes  the  items discussed using the following  expressions:

• To sum up...

• In a nutshell.

• In summary, we are going...

• Let me summarize by saying this...

• This is what we have discussed today...

• Your marks are ... Your  homework is... [2].

So, these words and phrases can be used by non-native speakers  in online classes.
